I might well be wrong, but I've always understood the probabilistic estimates as % of the surrounding geographic area that will experience precipitation. So, a 40% probability of rain means that during that time frame, 40% of the area is expected to experience rainfall. Of course, if that is the correct definition, then it remains true that the aggregate probability over an 8 hour period can be greater than any of the 3 hour probabilities. But now I am wondering what the correct definition actually is.

DL: Interesting... I'll look into this and report back. I suppose neither definition supplies the right information for someone who's planning on go somewhere at some given time.
