I think that the best way to prevent yourself from some disease is reading and informing about it. I'm not talking about learning like for medical school. Everyone had to know the basics.

How To Deal With Jealousy

Reading about diseases is all well and good when taken in moderation.
However it seems that many people read about an illness, and then start showing the symptoms. This creates a big problem in the healthcare industry since most people that do "self-diagnosis" at home tell their doctors that the sky is falling. This takes the precious time that doctors have from people that actually need their assistance.
